Don Buckalew

Don Buckalew
February 20, 1928 - January 6, 2018

Don Buckalew, age 89, passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2018. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Olney with Scotte Clark, officiating, assisted by Chad Edgington. Interment will follow in Restland Cemetery under the direction of Lunn Funeral Home of Olney.

Don was born on February 20, 1928 in Olney, Texas to the late Floyd Buckalew and Zella (Kilcrease) Buckalew Allison. He was a graduate of Olney High School and a lifetime resident of Olney. Don married JoAnn Galloway Portwood on November 7, 1957 in Las Vegas, Nevada. She preceded him in death on January 28, 2006. Together, Don and JoAnn, were self-employed in the oil and ranching business. Don often told of the many nights he would come home late and have to tell JoAnn they hit a dry hole. Together they persevered, however, and became a success story in the industry, Don giving JoAnn and her faith all the credit.

Don was a member of First Baptist Church and the Downtown Menís Bible Class. He loved Olney and served on the Olney Hamilton Hospital Board. He was a big supporter of the American Cancer Society and Hamilton Hospital Foundation. In fact, he and JoAnn are recognized on many plaques throughout the Hamilton Hospital and Olney Family Clinic for their contributions, whether it was monetary or the gift of new equipment or amenities. They were truly hometown heroes.

Don always joked that he barely made it through school, and kept his grade school report cards on his desk to prove it. He was smart and witty, however, and most definitely proved to be a sharp businessman. Don was always game for a good time, too, especially when it came to his seven grandchildren. It might have been a foot race, a trip to Disneyland, or a summer evening camped out on the screened in porch telling stories. Each of Donís family members experienced love and fun with him throughout their life and could fill pages of a book with their colorful stories.

Don was also preceded in death by his son, Bill Sunday Portwood, Jr. and his daughter-in-law, Babe Portwood.

Don is survived by one son, Harley Portwood of Round Timber; two daughters: Donna Kay Harrison of Corpus Christi and Linda Rounsaville and husband Jim of Springcreek; seven grandchildren: Joe Don Harrison, Wil Rounsaville and wife Natalie, Sunday McAdams and husband Clint, Chance Harrison, Sommer Portwood, Cole Harrison and wife Morgan, Skye Urbanczyk and husband Steven, and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Olney Hamilton Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 158, Olney, Texas 76374.
